The father smiled brightly at the thought of getting his daughter a gift. It was fun and quirky Rubix cube, he found it at a thrift shop while he was buying some clothes and bedsheets. It was getting colder and they needed something to keep them warm. They lived up in the high Country, in the state of Tennessee. The reason he even took the cube was because it was free and the store owner was begging for the man to take it away. He even gave him $5 off the order. Even though the deal seemed slightly sketchy it was fine by the customer.
When he returned from the store it was 5:47 pm and his daughter was in the kitchen. Her brown hair was in braids which were thrown in up in some kind of messy bun. It didn’t look the best but it kept the hair out of her face. She turned her head and smiled at him and jumped down from the seat and walked up to him.
“What did you get?” she asked as her pale skin glowed under the the dim lights. Her head snapped around when she heard a light buzzing noise. “What’s that?”
“What do you think it is?”
“A bee.”
The Dad sighed and slightly grinned, he was expecting that response. It was only the messed up radiator that was in desperate need of repair. Sadly the family couldn’t pay to fix it, so it sat around buzzing like that, scaring the poor girl Samantha.
“What is it then?” she asked, a sassy look on her face. She hated the buzzing of the old radiator and hated the old dim light bulbs. Usually once it got to 6:15 it was impossible to see. But the family had adapted to the dim light and lurked around at night.
“It’s the radiator, you know it’s broken.” he said.
“What’s so funny about it?” she asked “And what’s that little ole’ thing behind your back?” she squinted her eyes and walked to the left trying to get another glimpse of it.
“Just a little somethin’, you know.” he grinned and walked farther to the right and his smile got wider.
“What is it?” she asked as she ran around him in circles trying to see it. After a moment or two of failure she gave up and resorted to annoying him. Lucky for him he had walked into another room, but she followed him.
“Dad? Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad, Dad?” she continued until he finally turned around his eyes wide.
“It’s just a little gift for ya, but I guess after how bad you’ve been behaving you ain’t going to be getting it. I mean it’s only a little rubix cube after all. You wouldn’t want it,” he grinned and walked a foot or two away and sat down at the kitchen table. “What’s for dinner?” he asked.
“I made some sandwiches if you want one,” she said as she walked to the kitchen to retrieve their small dinner.
About an hour later they had eaten and sat on the couch playing a card game in semi-darkness. They were playing a card game called war and were about half way through when Samantha brought up the old toy again.
“So you got me a Rubix cube?” she asked.
“Yeah, I did. I got it from the thrift shop run by Mr. Jones, he was in such a hurry to get rid of it. I don’t know why, but it was fine by me.” he explained.
“Oh, well then. I drew an ace, what about you?” her expression goes from the stereotypical “O” face to the “I can tell I’m going to beat you at this game” face. I mean, after all she had drawn ace and had an incredibly large stack of cards.
The father scowled, “A Jack,” he squinted his eyes and handed her his card. He looked at the cards left to draw, there was only one left. He sighed.
“ A jack,” his daughter says and grabs his card, “You have a 10!” she says and starts to laugh.
“What? I could have won,” He yells, “one point off.” he says.
“You didn’t though, but good job. It’s obvious I won, so there’s no need to count the cards.” she says and then looks at her dad’s back pocket. “Where’s the Rubix cube, I deserve it I won?” she crosses her arm and pouts her lips.
The dad sighs, “You really are greedy aren’t you,” he says sarcastically and grins.
Samantha grins and shakes her head. “I’m not as greedy as you, keeping me from my much deserved present. So watch what you say, I have some very valued points.” she smiled her quirky smile and flipped her braids, which proved to be challenging (but she did it anyway).
“You’re just like your mom,” he muttered. Samantha sat slightly uncomfortable, he never talked about her mom. It was awkward for everyone, by everyone it meant the two people occupying the house. Instead of asking him about her she sat there uncomfortably waiting for another conversation starter in her head.
“So… can I have the Rubix cube yet, Dad?” she asked a moment later she asked. She figured if she came back to the Rubix cube topic it would all be fine. Or that’s what she thought.
“Do you really want the Rubix cube?”
“Yeah,” Samantha responded.
“Fine then,” he grinned and stood up to retrieve the small toy from his back pocket, it would be near impossible to do so. Finally he pulled it out and Samantha saw his big hands wrapped around it. He smiled and slowly opened his hands, the Rubix cube was stunning. Just beautiful.
It was a cube that was perfectly arranged with colours on each side, all a perfect square. The colours were beautiful and elegant. There were six sides, all had different colours. There was a lilac-purple colour, a dark forest green colour, a dark teal colour, a pink the colour of a raspberry, a bright but at the same time light yellow, and a deep crimson. Every other stone had a gem, rhinestone or some kind of embellishment. It was gorgeous.
“I love it!” Samantha yelled and got up. Her smile covered her entire face and went from ear to ear. She reached out her hand and motioned for him to put it in her hand. He did and she smiled at the cube and grinned at her dad. “Thanks!”
“You better like it, but now it’s time for sleep. And no- you can’t not play with your Rubix cube. Time for bed, it’s late.” he took the cube out of her hand and ushered her off to bed.
“But Dad!It’s only-” she paused to look at the clock, “it’s only 8:47 pm. It’s only 8:47, that’s not late.”
“If you used your rounding skills it would be,” the Dad grinned, he knew she hated rounding… and school. “So how do we round this?” he asked.
She rolled her eyes and her jaw dropped, “You expect me to round that?” she said annoyed.
“Yep,”
“Fine then,” she said
Her Dad smiled, “Hurry up Sam,” he said calling her by her nickname. “We don’t have all night,”
“Fine,” she said. “So you round up the seven to make it 8:50 and that means 9:00. So it’s 9:00, not too late. Can I play with the cube for a minute?”
“No, time to go to sleep. No excuse, it’s bedtime.”
“Fine then,” Samantha sighed, she scowled and walked to bed. She laid down in the bed and hugged close to her stuffed animals. She hums a lullaby to herself and fell asleep. A few minutes later her dad walks in and kisses his daughter on the cheek and walks to bed.
NEXT MORNING
***************************************************************************
Samantha wakes up to sunlight streaming through her room. She swings her feet over the bed and sees that she wore her outfit to bed last night. She gets up and ignores her cover, which has collapsed on the floor. Samantha goes to her small closet and gets a little dress out, she had somewhere to be and wanted to look pretty today. The girl chose a simple red dress that is somewhat flowy and reaches a bit past her knees. Then she slips on her only pair of heels and starts to walk to the kitchen.
On the way there she slips, it’s due to her heels she can barely walk in the things. She wondered how people managed to make it look so effortless, how they can wear these everyday. She pulls herself back up and continues to walk there without any mishaps.
She sits at the table and looks at her father who is leaning over the stove. He’s making pancakes with pecans, it’s his favorite kind and is made from a recipe his Grandmother taught him.
“You look fancy today,” the Dad says, turning his head back over his shoulder. He acknowledged her outfit and the speckle of dirt on it from were she fell. “You’re wearing your heels,”
“Yeah,” Samantha says and looks down at her dress. She sees the small speckle of dirt and wipes it off.
“Well your Rubix cube is on the table, have at it kid.” he answers pointing to the cube, it’s right were he said it would be.
“Thanks,” she says and grabs the cube. For a minute she just holds it, soaking in all the great feelings it gave her. Due to the fact the cube was already solved she grabbed it and jumbled it up.
A minute later she screamed, she was falling!

“Dad!” she screamed as she fell through the black hole. Samantha felt as if she was falling through space and she swore she saw the Sun. She continued to rocket through the atmosphere, she held the cube tight in her hand. Then she started to see strange creatures reach out to her. Her screams became louder and her voice fell hoarse.
Finally, she hit the ground and the breath was knocked out of her lungs. But, due to how much this had worn her out she passed out as soon as she hit the ground. But little did she know she was being watched. 2 HOURS LATER *************************************************************************** Samantha woke up to see a cinnamon brown face peering over her. As her eyes fluttered open she saw the figure, she closed her eyes and opened them again. The same figure was there. “Who are you?” she stammered. “Nosttaw Ahtnamas, your opposite.” she answered as she stood up. “Who, what, why when?” Samantha asked, completely confused. “Your opposite, goodness gracious. Listen! My name is Nosttaw Ahtnamas,” she answered a bit annoyed. “Oh, okay. Where am I?” she asked looking around. “In opposite world and I’m your opposite, my name is Nosttaw Ahtnamas. Now why are you here?” she asked, the girl had been crouching down but finally stood up. She was tall. “Oh my goodness, you’re like 12 feet tall!” she yelled seeing her height. “I wish,” the girl said in reality she was only 11”5, she told Samantha this. “No, I’m only 11”5. Sadly, I wish I was that tall.” she looked to the girl who was much shorter than her. “Oh,” “Well, how did you get here? We need to get you back home before the balance is corrupted.” She said walking towards a man-made-settlement that looked like a village. “What! I’m going to destroy the universe? What the heck! Are you serious?” she yelled loudly and had a mini scream. “Well sort of,” she said shrugging her shoulders as if destroying the universe was something that you would do everyday. “What do you mean by sort of?” She yelled. “I mean if a mortal resides here for too long the universe will practically eat itself, so we need to get you home. Why are you here anyway?” She asks walking closer to the village. “Oh and we will also be going to the Medicine woman to see if she has any idea what’s going on.” “Okay, so we're going to a Medicine Woman, I’m about to destroy the universe and possibly everyone alive. Sounds perfect,” she says sarcastically. She walks ahead of her opposite in an attempt to have time to think. But due to her having such long legs in less then a minute she’s already super far behind. “You’re slow,” the opposite decides to point out. It’s a solid true statement that can’t be argued against. “Thanks for pointing out the obvious, you’re so good at being a detective. Might want to take it up as a side hobby, I think you could even intimidate Sherlock Holmes.” She yells sarcastically. She tries to get in front of her, but fails up and they both end up at a steady pace beside each other. Finally they reach the village and the old Medicine Woman. They enter her large fancy house, it’s bigger than anything she’s ever seen. It made her envious to see the house, the huge house. Not a single person in her town had a house like this. She had never seen one this big, not even on Television. They keep walking on down the huge hallway and finally an old lady in a victorian era ball gown appears. She looks somewhat snobbishly at them. “What do you need?” She asked her lip curling up. Samantha squeezed the cube harder and elbowed Nosttaw. “You tell her, I have no idea whats going on.” She softly muttered into her ear. To even whisper in her ear she had to jump up and Nosttaw had to bend over some. The result was choppy and the old woman stared at them like they were crazy. “I don’t either, that's why we’re here. It happened to you, you have to know something.” She whisper-yelled into Samantha’s ear. “You tell her,” Samantha telled and elbowed Nosttaw and ducked down a little so she couldn’t talk to her. Finally Nosttaw opened mouth to speak, but it came out a jumbled up, stuttering mess. “So, ummm.... We-are-slightly-worried-about-destroying-the-world. Ummm… Also it’s HER fault, not mine!” She sort of yelled and pointed at Samantha like she was a guilty person on trial. But it wasn’t all her fault, not entirely. Samantha glared at her opposite and shook her head. “It’s not my fault. I don’t know how I got here or why I’m here. Last thing I remember I was playing with this Rubix cube my Dad go-’’ “What!” the Medicine Woman screamed. It was so loud and unexpected that Samantha fell to the floor. Nosttaw shared the same scared look and they worriedly stared at each other. They stared at each other and made a silent agreement to pester her with questions when she got up. But even after twenty minutes she lay there collapsed on the ground. They were scared she was dead. So they carried her up to a bed with the help of a butler or two. They talked and figured out that it was the cube. The Medicine Woman was scared because this had only happened a few times. It had corrupted the balance of the universe and all of them had killed everyone. Everyone but the Medicine Woman. She was immortal and was incapable of death. She had a long, sad and depressing life in front of her. But that’s terribly off topic, we’ll talk about her another day. The Rubix cube would transport whoever was playing with it to a different dimension. Problem was there was 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 combinations but they only had up until the next full moon to fix it. That was 7 days. Surely not enough time to save he world. To help the matter Samantha still wouldn’t wake up and just laid around on the bed. After she had slept for an entire day the Medicine woman decided they had wasted too much time. She decided she would use a simple spell to wake her up. The spell she decides upon is simple, it’s in her Beginner's Spellbook and only uses a few ingredients. So the Medicine Lady goes to get her book to make sure she doesn’t mess up this time. Even though the spell was simple if you don’t complete it properly it could kill whoever it was cast upon. That’s why she had to be careful, she, the Girl Samantha was the only way to fix the Universe. The only way to make sure it didn’t destroy itself. If she was gone they were screwed. So the old Medicine Woman took extra care to prep that potion. She carefully grabbed the ingredients. All of them, all the Sickle Berries, Gretel Moss, Himalayan salt, Rose quartz, Spider eyes and a Moonstone for good luck. It was an easy spell. You really only needed four ingredients, but as every spellbook said to make your spell ore likely to work add a moonstone. So she used one. The old woman barely ever used things to advance her potions, she was usually against it, but now it seemed like a good idea. And she also prayed. It was also something she’d never done, she was so unlike Samantha who had been baptized at the age of two and a half. She hoped that whoever was up in the Heathens would help her. So next she started on her potion, she switched to the page were she would find it. It was on seven hundred ninety-three, she was half way through the book. She completes the potion in an hour, Nosttaw swore it took an eternity. So she gets it in the recommended serving size and puts it in a simple Mason jar and plops in a straw (She had to be stylish if you know what I’m saying). Her shaky hands grip the cup and almost drop them, but she doesn’t. She walks to the couch and Nosttaw props up Samantha’s head on a pillow to help assist her. Nosttaw continues to hold her head as the Medicine Woman pours the potion down Samantha’s throat. She continues to lay there for a minute or two and suddenly the medicine woman passes out. |

“Mrs. Medicine Woman!” Nosttaw yells and starts to violently shake the old woman.
Meanwhile Samantha slowly wakes up, oblivious to the scene happening around her. She yawns and Nosttaw mistakes it for the old woman groaning in pain, it’s not her though. It’s Samantha slowly waking up from her day long slumber. So Samantha yawns again and stretches her arms and slowly starts to get up.
But her arms accidentally knocks over a vase.
In an attempt to make it not fall over she makes a half-awake-half-asleep dive to the floor. She doesn’t catch and just knocks over another flower vase.
Nosttaw turns her head and sees that Samantha has woke up and turns her head. She stands up and does a small jump of happiness and yells “YES!”.
“What’s up with her?” Samantha asks and than once again yawns. She’s still acting awfully stupid and oblivious.
“She fainted,” Nosttaw explained.
“Oh,”
“So we need to wake her up, do you know CPR?” Nosttaw asks her.
“Do you?”
“Yeah, but it’d be too hard to bend over to do it. I am 11”5,” she says shrugging her shoulders and still waiting for an answer.
“Sorta, I did CPR on a poodle once. So I-”
“You did CPR on a poodle?” she asks, a bit weirded out.
“Yes, long story short I did. Now no questions, WE HAVE A WORLD TO SAVE!” she screamed the last part and momentarily damaged Nosttaw’s hearing. It also caused the Medicine Woman to wake up, so she got up from the floor.
“You’re awake, Samantha!” she yelled and rejoiced with multiple, small, ear piercing screams. It wasn’t the best thing to do considering Samantha hated high pitched noises.
“STOP!” Samantha yelled in response. Ironically she was also screaming, so Nosttaw laughed in irony.
So finally they stopped and the old Medicine Woman told them about how they needed to get back home.
So eventually Samantha took the cube and switched around one of the mini-squares, her and Nosttaw were holding hands and they instantly started to transport to another dimension.
“Bye,” the Medicine Woman yelled.
“Bye!”Samantha and Nosttaw said in union.
It was a sad time as the two opposite had a few tears fall from her eyes. It was a quite different scenario for each of them as Samantha hardly cried and Nosttaw was very emotional. So a few lone tears dripped down Samantha’s face and her body began to slightly shake. On the other hand Nosttaw had tears dripping down her face, was violently shaking, her nose had become running and she was sniffling.
After a minute of rocketing through the Solar System they arrived at their next destination.
Everything is blue, it's quite astounding to be rocketed into a strange planet and everything is blue. From a dark navy blue to a soft baby blue it’s all blue. Even though blue is her favorite colour it not going to work. So samantha and Nosttaw’s hands drop and Samantha looks at the cube, so does Nostaw. The white side of the cube is almost complete, just one more square needed to be moved. Samantha flipped over the cube and saw that the white square was stuck on the side beside it to the right.
Samantha and her opposite joined their hands together silently and Samantha moved the only white square left closer to the (almost) completely white side. Once again they fell through the atmosphere.
Suddenly they were in a swamp and they started to sink. Samantha’s mouth opened wide with fear and they continued to sink.
“Change the cube you idiot or we’re going to drown!” Nosttaw shrieked loudly.
Samantha held the cube and Nosttaw hand too paralyzed to move. They kept sinking and Nosttaw ripped the cube from Samantha’s hand and Samantha screamed. She grabbed tightly onto Nosttaw and she quickly grabbed Samantha and pulled her up.
“Get ready,” Nosttaw screamed and switched the cube to solve the white side completely. And to also got them out of that place, that hideous swamp. As Samantha and Nosttaw were pulled out of the swap, Nosttaw saw why Samantha was frozen in fear.
